Where do I need fire extinguishers?

Depending on your building’s function, you will need a minimum number of fire extinguishers per square foot.

  1. Offices, places of worship, hotels, and motels.  If the building is not fully sprinklered, a 2-A fire extinguisher is required for every 6,000 feet of floor area on each floor.  Fully sprinklered buildings need a 2-A fire extinguisher for every 12,000 square feet of floor area on each floor.
  2. Rooming houses and single room occupancies with over 15 sleeping rooms.   At least one 2-A fire extinguisher must be located in the manager or superintendent’s apartment.
  3. Hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes, and nurseries that accommodate more than 15 children.  One 2-A fire extinguisher is required for every 2,500 square feet of floor area on each floor.
  4. Places of assembly and retail stores.  One 2-A fire extinguisher is required for every 2,500 square feet of floor area per floor.
  5. Piers, stables, warehouses, and manufacturing occupancies.  One 2-A fire extinguisher is required for every 2,500 square feet of floor area per floor.
  6. Non-residential kitchens (including communal kitchens).  Fire extinguishers capable of putting out a Class K fire are necessary.
